Whether it be a winter fantasy of snow and frosty mountain air or the coniferous forests and jade waters of summer, Whistler, Canada is the perfect destination in any season.
The setting for the David Jones SS22 campaign, Whistler creates the ultimate backdrop to discover the world anew with wide-eyed wonder.
From outdoor adventures to luxury spa experiences, this is everything you need to know to be inspired to book your next trip.
Where to stay
Whistler has accommodation options to meet every expectation. Think: a pod hotel, serviced apartments and suites, lodges and, of course, luxury hotels.
For avid adventurers who enjoy the finer things in life, book a stay at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, a hotel sitting at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. Whether you’re hiking, biking, sightseeing or hitting the slopes, the year-round resort offers action in spades. Getting on the mountain is seamless with Fairmont’s valet service – from skis and snowboards to mountain bikes, the staff will have you setup in no time, whether you’ve brought your own equipment or choose to rent from the hotel. The Fairmont’s amenities include open-air fires, pools and spas, multiple restaurants and shopping.
What to do
Skiing brought international attention to Whistler and no winter visit would be complete without a run or two on the slopes. There are over 200 runs across two mountains; Whistler and Blackcomb. Difficulties range from green (easy) to double black diamonds (most difficult). If you’re new to the sport, arrange a lesson before venturing on your own, or if you’re an experienced skier, the peaks will not disappoint.
Don’t dismiss Whistler as a ski-only vacation spot. During the warmer months, hiking takes centre stage. Grab a day pass to the park and head out to explore. Garibaldi Lake (a six hour trek) offers pristine aqua waters and bountiful vistas, while Brandywine Falls winds through forest until you arrive at a stunning waterfall. An outdoor mecca, you have ample choice of activities regardless of when you visit: bear viewing, mountain biking, golfing, hiking, kayaking, ATVs and jeep tours, and even ziplining.
If you’ve had your fill of adrenaline, find a moment of self care with a day at the Scandinave Spa. The ultimate choice for relaxation, it is an entirely silent spa that uses hydrotherapy and massage from Nordic roots to help the body and mind unwind.
Art lovers will find joy in the stunning architecture of the Audain Art Museum. Highlighting a comprehensive collection, the museum shows off works by some of Canada’s most celebrated artists. In addition to the permanent collection the Museum has visiting exhibitions of art from Canada and around the world.
What to pack
What to eat
Foodies will delight in Whistler’s endless options. Kick off mornings with a stop at the Fairmont’s Portobello for coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches, or stop by Crêpe Montagne for something more filling. Come lunchtime, there are plenty of pubs serving casual fare alongside craft beers for a taste of local flavours.
Freshen up for the evening and take a fireside drink in the heart of the village at Firerock Lounge. Cocktail fans should add The Raven Room to their list, and the Champagne Lounge at the Bearfoot Bistro is also worth a visit. Be sure to plan an intimate dinner at Araxi for inventive farm-to-table plates or Il Caminetto for upscale Italian.
Take a nightcap at the Mallard Room at the Fairmont for twists on classic cocktails. Order the espresso martini, which comes in a lantern filled with applewood smoke. And if it puts you in the mood for a midnight snack, the mountain burger will sate late-night cravings.
