Tastemaker and influencer Sarah Ellen wears some of the biggest trends of the moment, to help you navigate the change of season in style.
The tricky time between seasons calls for a certain kind of finesse when it comes to dressing. Luckily, tastemaker and influencer Sarah Ellen has cast her eye over the moment’s biggest trends, seen here in some of David Jones’ most covetable new arrivals. From expertly pairing separates to nailing tonal dressing (and finding the perfect shoe and accessories to finish the look), let Sarah Ellen show you how to achieve the ultimate transeasonal wardrobe.
White on white
The tonal trend is huge at the moment, and nothing feels fresher than white on white. Whether creamy or crisp, keep tones in the same family, with dresses and separates from the likes of Faithfull The Brand, MINKPINK and new arrival Ownley.
Downtime dressing
Take your loungewear out of ‘iso’ territory and firmly IRL with polished separates from Nude Lucy, Elka Collective and more. But don’t sweat, because you won’t have to forsake any of the ease and comfort you’ve come to love – simply trade sneakers (or socks) for a flat boot or sandal, and pop your favourite jewellery pieces on. Leaving the house is optional.
Midi vs maxi
Whether a midi or maxi, the floral dress can easily go from high-summer staple to transeasonal wardrobe wonder with just a few layering hacks. A pair of boots or sneakers will add instant cred, while a knit in the same tone as your hero piece will balance pragmatism with polish. Need a new MVP? Look to styles from Lulu & Rose and Bec + Bridge, to start.
The micro bag
Look, no hands! A micro trend for maximum impact, the mini bag can be worn cross-body or slung over the shoulder for an instant style hit. Dylan Kain’s gold-accented version can even be worn as a belt-bag or clutch. With only enough room for the essentials, it’s a definite lesson in streamlining – but the style pay-off is certainly worth it.
Colour blocking
Whether in contrasting or complementary tones, colour blocking is a standout look for the season. Several brands are dipping their toe into the trend, but perhaps the best-of comes via new-on-the-block Sovere and Blanca. Stripes have a certain everyday wearability, while a bold panelled piece is a style statement all of its own.
Layered gold jewellery
An affinity for all things gilded isn’t going anywhere this season – if anything, the moment calls for laying it on thick. Opt for jewellery in various textures and finishes to add depth to your outfit: think gold-toned bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings from brands such as Reliquia and Amber Sceats.
New knits
Earrings, RELIQUIA Star Sign Necklace, RELIQUIA Paola Necklace (worn as bracelet)
Knitwear is a tried-and-true winter staple, but this season, unexpected shapes and colours give it fresh new life. Balance chunky knits and voluminous sleeves with long skirts, dresses or even a transeasonal pair of shorts in neutral tones, before grounding the look with on-trend combat boots. Alternatively, shake up your palette with a striking hue such as duck egg blue.
