The Boot Essentials We’re Investing In For 2023

Meet the style staples your wardrobe has been calling for. Whether you’re a fan of the ankle boot, or the knee-high boot, or looking to make the most of this season’s hottest boot trends (hello, cowboy boots!), meet the boots essentials made for walkin’.

How to Wear This Seasons Must-Have Boots Essentials

The Chelsea Boot

There’s something about the Chelsea boot that keeps us coming back for more every season. Effortless, comfortable, and incredibly easy to style, these fail-proof shoes will always find a home in your wardrobe. Chelsea boots are typically close-fitting flat boots with an elastic side panel and a loop or tab at the back of the boot. Most will stop at ankle height, although this season’s trend sees the Chelsea boot creeping higher up the leg to a mid-calf finish.

The best way to style a Chelsea boot is to dress them up as you would your favourite white sneaker. For an effortless day look, pair this boot with a skirt or shorts, an oversized blazer, and matching socks that finish just above the boot. Throw on some statement gold jewellery to add an extra level of polish. The chunky Chelsea will always go well with any winter maxi dress, especially a knit dress, but work best with a higher neckline which helps to balance the heaviness of the boot.

Stiletto Ankle Boots

For those who love heeled ankle boots, this style is for you. A more updated version of the chunky ankle boot of last season, the stiletto ankle boot is a boot essential that takes you from the office to date night without much ado. Stiletto ankle boots have a slimmer silhouette, which means they work best with skinny or slimmer-fitting pants.

A pair of slim jeans paired with a simple shirt and blazer is a textbook look for these iconic shoes. Longer pants that cover the boot are always possible but for a more flattering silhouette, and to show off the shoe, opt for cropped pants that stop short just above the top of the boot. Try to aim for a little sliver of skin to help break the ensemble up.

Knee High Boots

Ruling supreme both on and off the runway, knee-high boots are quickly proving that they’re not going anywhere. Characterised as a boot that rises to just below the knee, the knee-high boot is one of those rare fashion pieces that strikes a balance between fashion and function: they look good, and keep you warm in winter.

The most common outfit to pair with a knee-high boot is simple: a pair of skinny pants with an oversized statement knit. To help balance out proportions, look for a chunkier knit to help offset the heaviness of the boot. For a more elevated ensemble, pair your knee-high boot with a feminine dress – a style popular on our Autumn Winter Runway show. Knee-high boots can match any length of dress, although the most flattering length is one that finishes just above the top of the boot. For longer dresses or, if you’re feeling adventurous, wide pants, opt for looser fitting pieces, especially around the boot.

Cowboy Boots

They say that in the fashion world, history repeats itself. There’s no trend where this rings more true than with the ‘90s and ‘00s revival, and with it, the return of the cowboy boot. While this season is not the cowboy boot’s first rodeo in the fashion arena (excuse the puns) the 2023 cowboy boot is less rugged than its predecessors and instead leans more into a polished finish.

Styling this boot can be a little difficult as it’s more specific than, say, a knee-high or ankle boot, and runs the risk of swaying into costume territory very easily. Keep your outfit simple and polished and avoid any Western-inspired pieces. Indulge in feminine or pretty pieces like ruffled skirts or pastel prints, as seen on our runway image above with Alemais and Ganni. Classic items like a trench coat also work well with a cowboy boot, or, for date night, a simple black dress

Square-Toe Boots

Arguably one of the most controversial styles to hit the runway over the past few years, this style boot is anything but ordinary. Although the square-toed shoe has popped up throughout history, its recent reemergence could be credited to Bottega Veneta’s groundbreaking 2019 collection featuring square-toed heels. Regardless, this iconic yet divisional style of shoe has continued to saturate runways and social media feeds time and time again.

The unique shape of this shoe has left many scratching their heads over correct styling etiquette. However, as is everything in fashion, the secret to styling square-toe boots is to create balance. Match the strong angular shape of the toe with strong silhouettes, and bold, edgy pieces. Pair your favourite square-toe boots with a pleated midi or maxi skirt, and an oversized blazer for a desk-to-dinner ensemble. Leather pants and denim will also work well with these edgy shoes. Avoid pieces that are ultra-feminine as they can clash too much.

Chunky Loafers

If a traditional boot is not your style, then its fashion cousin, the Chunky Loafer, is here to elevate your look. Inevitably polished, and transeasonal by nature, the loafer is a versatile staple for any wardrobe. From maxi skirts to shorts, floral dresses and stirrup leggings, the loafer can do it all. This season, look to academia-inspired chunky silhouettes with exaggerated platforms, and stylish embellishments like buckles.

For a fail-proof style, invest in the classic Penny Loafer. Featuring a horizontal strap or “saddle,” that sits across the instep of the shoe, Penny Loafers are the breakout star of the season. For an A+ in winter styling, follow Tony Bianco’s styling and match a pair of souped-up Penny loafers with warm socks and, if the temperature calls for it, some sheer tights. For an effortless ensemble that strikes a balance between casual and professional, pair your favourite oversized blazer with your loafers, mixing and matching the bottoms to suit the weather. A monochromatic outfit will always be a chic approach to dressing, but you can also experiment with adding a little splash of colour to your winter rotation with a pair of loafers in brown, navy, or beige.
